커피 먹어요

We had a daughter of a family friend of the wife come and visit us over the weekend.   We ended up taking her for some site seeing and such in the short time she was with us before she get’s ready to go back to korea next week.  Some exchange program with korean national university and U of I here for some post graduate research.  Very smart girl but I noticed something as the wife was talking with her.

커피 먹어요……Now it was in a larger sentence but that’s two words I hear all the time and had to interrupt.  Did you just say you wanted to ‘eat’ coffee….not drink it?  She seemed to click to what I was asking and changed and said drinking in korean and I said no …no that’s ok.  If that’s what you really say in korean I want to know.  I just never heard that.   She said yes she eats coffee and laughed.  Hmmm is that something other korean speakers say?  Interesting.

Looking at Topik.  Registration date is still not on the website for my location.  The wife called the embassy and they said it should be on the web site first week of Feb.  Want to make sure I don’t miss the deadline to apply.  Thanks for the quick info bit from Hangukdrama.com to my last post.  It looks like I’ll be taking one test and based off how well I do could either be graded a level 1 or level 2 from it.  That’s great to know.

I have to say after I go through ‘Korean Grammar in Use – Beginner’ that we picked up that it doesn’t come close to talktomeinkorean.com explanations on the korean sentence patterns(grammar).  I’m flying through the book because they also get into…….. this is declarative conjugation of the third person when hiding under a table behind the bank of this grammar point….you know what I mean.  Phew…..so I’m using it more for a reference to see if there’s any grammar points I’m not familiar with but so far so good.  Thank goodness ttmik.com came along when they did and I started to study seriously!!!  They are a life saver!!!

I’m done with ‘아랑사또전’.  Korean dramas that I’ve watched at times have a sense to really blow the last episode.  The drama was watchable but as I told the wife who she had talked with friends that they considered it not so good I was like well don’t tell me the ending.  Now I can see why they didn’t like the drama.  The ending was really really stupid!!!  Ok I’m not a good movie reviewerer like a Roger Ebert but I was like what was that as I complained about the ending to the wife.  She of course was like…..I told you so.  I won’t give details as I don’t want to wreck it for any others that may have not watched it or who think differently and thought it ended ok.  But I got through it and as I continue to look for new content I know eventually I will hit upon another blockbuster…..eventually.

The drama ‘청담동 앨리스’  based off a recommendation from a VIP comes up next!  Later…….

  1. Hahaha. Yes Koreans use 먹다 to express to drink in English even if they have a word for drink. I think they even use 먹다 more often than 마시다 (but I know in textbooks it’s always 미시다). They also eat medicines instead of “drinking” / “taking” it.
I’m not yet.done with Arang. But I peeked at the final episode. I’m still planning o finish it soon.
    Goodluck in TOPIK!!! ^_^

      • It would seem so…. just surprised I never heard it after all these years till now…I guess the only reason is the wife’s habit of not saying it much like that…at least that’s what she told me. Maybe I never heard in drama’s till now also but I’ll be on the lookout for it now!
